Urban expansion has often resulted in the loss or simplification of green areas, leading to negative impacts on air quality, water management, biodiversity, and the physical and mental well-being of citizens. This abstract proposes an analysis of the crucial role that vegetation, in its various forms (parks, green roofs, green facades, street trees), plays in the transition towards more sustainable, resilient, and livable cities.
Urban vegetation is no longer considered merely an aesthetic element, but a fundamental infrastructure that offers a range of essential ecosystem services. It helps mitigate the urban heat island effect, absorbs atmospheric pollutants, manages stormwater runoff to reduce flood risks, and serves as a habitat for wildlife. Furthermore, the presence of green spaces promotes social cohesion, physical activity, and mental health, significantly improving the quality of urban life.
The conference will explore case studies, innovative technologies, and urban policies that have successfully integrated green spaces into development strategies. It will discuss the challenges and opportunities related to urban green planning, from selecting plant species best suited to the local climate to implementing participatory management models. The goal is to highlight how accurate design and enhancement of urban ecosystems are not a cost, but a strategic investment for a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable urban future.
