SCIENTIFIC GUIDELINES FOR  PER LA THE MANAGEMENT OF MODENA’S URBAN GREENERY HERITAGE

The Municipality of Modena, with the support of the AlberItalia Foundation ETS, has concluded a benchmark project for a renewed vision of urban greenery, which is no longer conceived merely as a decorative or ornamental element. The study conducted by the Foundation highlights how trees, parks, and wooded areas are tangible tools for improving people’s daily well-being, by reducing summer heat on the most exposed streets, enhancing neighborhood livability, improving air quality, and helping the city face the impacts of the climate crisis.

This has resulted in a comprehensive Strategic Plan dedicated to the design and management of urban greenery as well as urban and peri-urban wooded areas, aimed at understanding where and how green spaces can truly impact the citizens’ quality of life.

The Modena project, which builds upon and enhances the significant path undertaken by the Municipality over the years regarding public green spaces, also offers key replicable elements and insights useful for other local administrations.

Indeed, one of the most important tools produced during this process is the publication of Guidelines developed by the AlberItalia Foundation and aimed at professionals, designers, and urban green space operators. Based on scientific evidence, the document gathers operational instructions to manage urban trees throughout their entire life cycle, from planning to maintenance.
