The Green Sector of the Future: Development, Challenges, and Competitiveness of Italian Nursery Farming

The sixth edition of “Il verde del futuro” (The Green Sector of the Future) took place—a conference organized by the Planta Regina Nursery District, in collaboration with Coldiretti and Assofloro, aimed at nursery growers, gardeners, and landscape designers. The event addressed key topics shaping the future of the sector: climate change, risk management, insurance, research and innovation, phytosanitary issues, and exports.

Among the political figures who spoke: Ettore Prandini, National President of Coldiretti, emphasized the need to strengthen cultivation contracts, support exports, allocate resources to compensate farmers affected by extreme weather events, and invest in research and development.

Among the proposals presented was the consideration of a potential mandatory insurance requirement in the agricultural sector, aimed at reducing overall insurance costs and strengthening business protection. For Fabio Mantovani, President of Coldiretti Mantua, the recent approval of the framework law on the nursery and flower sector represents important recognition for an industry that ensures quality and professionalism while playing a significant role in public health and well-being.

Finally, Alessandro Beduschi, Regional Minister for Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forests of the Lombardy Region, highlighted the weight of the sector in Lombardy, which accounts for over €300 million in revenue, nearly 5,000 companies, and more than 10,000 employees. It is a sector called upon to face epochal challenges, starting with the impacts of climate change.
