The European Union is Making Concrete Progress Toward Its 2030 Climate and Energy Goals

According to the latest assessment of the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) published by the European Commission, EU Member States have made significant improvements to their plans following the recommendations issued in December 2023. However, some gaps remain: Belgium, Estonia, and Poland have yet to submit their final NECPs, and Slovakia’s individual assessment is still ongoing.

The overall picture is encouraging. The EU is now on track to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 54% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, bringing it close to the 55% reduction target set by the European Climate Law. At the same time, the bloc aims to reach a renewable energy share of at least 42.5%.

Despite a challenging geopolitical environment, the Commission’s evaluation confirms that the EU is staying the course—continuing to invest in the clean energy transition and in industrial competitiveness, while also addressing the social dimension of the transition. Source: European Union
